knockin' on George's door

This morning, I drank a shot of milk. On purpose. That's something I haven't done in more than a decade.

For about 10 years, I've had a lactose intolerance that triggered a nasty underlying condition like unto food poisoning. If I consumed dairy (or did sit-ups or otherwise annoyed my intestines), I'd be brutally sick for about 24 hours and then spend a week recovering completely. My GI doc's best guess was that I had IBS. Since my symptoms didn't fit IBS well, though (I had vomiting & mild fever along with standard IBS symptoms), I ended up naming my mystery intestinal ailment "George," just to have something to call it.

My recent appendectomy suggests that what I really had was chronic, recurring appendicitis. I've had none of those IBS-like symptoms since the surgery 4 months ago. And I've been experimenting with eating things that have bits of cheese or butter or milk cooked into them, just to test the waters. So far, so good. Today, I decided to take the plunge and try milk.

It was organic and lactose-free (treated with lactase). I only had an ounce. Again, so far, so good.

Wish me luck. :)

Best of luck! Wouldn't it be GREAT if you could expand your diet, since removing a faulty appendix?

PS - Zoo?

Thanks! It would be totally fabu.

Zoo, definitely. Weekends are a little crowded just now -- how's August 13 look for you?

Shall we touch base when it gets closer? I'll pencil it in for now.

Huzzah!

Fingers and toes crossed and knocking on my desk for you. I hope you get to rejoin the dairy-eating world :)

Re: Huzzah!

Me too! :)

I don't even care about eating large amounts of dairy products. I just want to not freak out about meal ingredients when I dine at a friend's or a restaurant. It would be a huge weight off my mind.

Re: Huzzah!

Likewise crossing, fingers, toes, legs, eyes... :-)

Not that dairy is so important in itself, but think of all the mental energy you get to let go of in not having to worry about its presence!

Now you can finally enjoy all that cheesy sci-fi stuff!

(Seriously, it's great that the new empty space in your abdomen has made room for new goodness. Take it slow, though, 'kay?)

I've never heard of chronic appendicitis, but that sounds like a good guess. I'm so glad that you're doing all right with these new things. Milk is nice in coffee and to cook with.

I've never heard of chronic appendicitis

I hadn't either -- apparently some docs don't believe it exists -- but a friend told me about the "smoldering appendicitis" her husband had had for 10 years before it became acute and required an appendectomy, and another doc did once suggest that my recurring problem could be appendicitis. I scoffed, of course, fool that I was.

Milk is nice indeed. After a 10-year absence, however, it tastes funny. <g>

Oh, yeah. I've heard about that. I wonder about it myself.

Don't think I can get anyone to take the thing out on a hunch, though.
